ECTAD Caribbean with support from social partners in Africa, Pacific and Europe union, placed small farmers and farm families as a key part of a social declaration to the 35th session at the ACP-EU parliamentary assembly June 18th to 20th 2018.
Mr Jethro Greene, Chief Coordinator of ECTAD Caribbean proposed to the European Economic and Social Affairs Committee and ensure that the following were included in the declaration.
My colleagues and I want to give an example of a long-term response by highlighting the importance of small agriculture clusters to reverse the exodus from rural areas that is currently challenging many ACP countries, In this context, agriculture and local farmers can play a key role , by mitigating migration flows fuelled by youth desperation to fulfil their economic, social and cultural aspirations. In this sense, it is important to facilitate the the activities of small and medium sized farmers, through the development of clustering activities and cooperatives where farmers are sharing equipment, sustainable input, knowledge and new market opportunities.
Dr Carl Grenidge, minister of foreign affairs and deputy president of Guyana, articulated clearly to the assembly, the importance of Agriculture and small and medium-sized farmers in fighting poverty, hunger and unemployment.
ECTAD approach in sustainable profitable markets for our small farmers is key in working our way out of poverty and food insecurity.
