Linking Agriculture to Nutrition and Health

Our local healthy fruit, vegetables and root crops offer a wonderful solution in reducing the high levels of non-communicable diseases (NCDS) in the Caribbean. Non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, account for over 55% of deaths according to our health officials.

The Caribbean has a high food import bill, with expenditures of well over 5 billion US dollars with the adage of processed foods making up a large component of the importation. We aim to promote actions to reduce and replace segments of the unhealthy process imported food with our healthy local alternatives. We can reduce NCDS and our region’s high food import bill.

Our strategy is to focus our attention on a private /public sector partnership approach with the emphasis on targeted investments in areas such as irrigation, food storage and climate-smart agriculture strategies. One private-sector group in St Vincent and the Grenadines, headed by businessman and a former Chief Agriculture Official, is attempting to establish a national cold storage facility for farmers, to safely store their produce for shipment overseas. ECTAD CARIBBEAN fully supports this effort.
